Extreme Day Trip to Paris: Can You Really Do Paris in One Day?

Most people visit Paris for a romantic weekend or a long city break. But what if you only had one day? Could you really experience the magic of the French capital between sunrise and bedtime?

That was the challenge we set ourselves.

Armed with cheap flights, no luggage and a very ambitious itinerary, we attempted an extreme day trip to Paris — flying out from Gatwick on the first flight of the morning and returning to the UK on the very last flight home that same night.

No hotel. No downtime. Just one very packed day in one of the world’s most iconic cities.

Here’s how our whirlwind Paris adventure unfolded.

What Is an Extreme Day Trip?

Extreme day trips are exactly what they sound like.

The idea is simple: catch the earliest possible flight to another city or country, spend the entire day exploring, then take the final flight home that same evening.

With budget airlines offering frequent low-cost flights across Europe, these mini adventures are becoming increasingly popular. In many cases, you can travel abroad for less than the price of a weekend night out.

For people who can’t always take long holidays, an extreme day trip offers the perfect opportunity to squeeze a full travel experience into a single day.

Of course, there’s one major downside: absolutely everything has to go to plan.

The Early Start at Gatwick Airport

Our day started painfully early at Gatwick Airport.

The plan sounded straightforward enough:

  • Fly from Gatwick to Paris first thing in the morning
  • Explore as much of Paris as possible
  • Return to the airport that evening
  • Catch the final flight back to Luton

Easy… in theory.

Unfortunately, we hit our first setback before we’d even landed.

While we were in the air, the clocks changed forward by an hour, instantly cutting into our already limited time in Paris. Suddenly, the pressure was on.

We landed in Paris at around 10am local time, knowing we needed to be back at the airport by roughly 8pm if we wanted any chance of making our flight home.

The race against time had officially begun.

Delays Before We Even Reached Paris City Centre

Getting into Paris turned out to be slower than expected.

Huge queues for train tickets delayed us by another 15 minutes, and by the time we finally arrived in the city centre, we were already feeling the pressure of our ambitious itinerary.

If there’s one thing we quickly learned about extreme day trips, it’s this: having a plan is absolutely essential.

Before travelling, we’d actually used ChatGPT to help create our Paris itinerary based on all the things we wanted to see in one day.

Our must-visit list included:

  • The Arc de Triomphe
  • The Champs-Élysées
  • Trocadéro Gardens
  • The Eiffel Tower
  • A traditional French boulangerie
  • A proper Parisian pâtisserie

It was time to see how many we could realistically fit in.

Seeing the Arc de Triomphe for the First Time

Our first major stop was the stunning Arc de Triomphe.

Seeing it in person was genuinely incredible. It’s one of those landmarks that somehow feels even bigger and more impressive in real life.

What wasn’t quite so impressive, however, was the traffic surrounding it.

The famous roundabout around the Arc de Triomphe looked completely chaotic. Cars darted in every direction, horns blasted constantly and crossing the road felt like taking part in a real-life action film.

At one point, a moment of questionable judgement resulted in us becoming separated in the middle of Paris after one of us sprinted across the road while the other wisely refused to follow.

Thankfully, we were reunited shortly afterwards — although not without a few folded arms and some understandable annoyance.

Walking the Champs-Élysées

Next up was the famous Champs-Élysées.

Opinions were slightly divided here.

One of us found it a little underwhelming, while the other absolutely loved the lively atmosphere, cafés and energy of the street.

Either way, there was no denying that wandering down the Champs-Élysées in the sunshine felt incredibly Parisian.

And naturally, no visit would be complete without food.

We stopped for warm pastries stuffed with beef, cheese and onion, grabbed pizza slices and even picked up matching berets after spotting them in a nearby shop.

At this point, we were fully embracing the tourist experience.

Walking Along the Seine Towards the Eiffel Tower

After ticking off the Champs-Élysées, we headed towards the River Seine and began walking in the direction of the Eiffel Tower.

Along the way, we crossed the beautiful Pont Alexandre III, one of the most elegant bridges in the city.

This was also the moment we first caught sight of the Eiffel Tower in the distance.

That glimpse would later come back to haunt us.

Because once we saw it, we knew there was absolutely no way we were leaving Paris without seeing it sparkle at night.

The Most Important Paris Stop: Cake

No trip to Paris is complete without visiting a pâtisserie.

Eventually, we found one filled with incredible-looking cakes and pastries, and naturally we had to stop.

The pistachio cake was a particular highlight and gave us a much-needed energy boost for the rest of the day.

At this stage, we still had around four and a half hours left before we needed to begin heading back towards the airport.

Plenty of time… or so we thought.

Finally Reaching the Eiffel Tower

As we approached the iconic Eiffel Tower, we once again discovered we had very different opinions.

One of us was completely blown away.

The other described it as “underwhelming.”

To be fair, the Eiffel Tower is one of those landmarks that people build up so much in their minds that expectations can become impossible to meet.

Still, standing beneath it on a sunny afternoon in Paris felt pretty special.

We spent some time taking photos, soaking up the atmosphere and reflecting on how much we’d already managed to squeeze into one single day.

Cocktails, Tired Legs and Tough Decisions

One unexpected benefit of an extreme day trip? No driving.

That meant cocktails were fully on the agenda.

After an extremely early start and thousands upon thousands of steps, we stopped for drinks near the Eiffel Tower while debating our next move.

Do we play it safe and head back early for the airport?

Or do we stay in Paris long enough to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle after dark?

Predictably, we chose chaos.

Risking Missing Our Flight Home

This was the turning point of the day.

We knew waiting for the Eiffel Tower light show would make getting back to the airport extremely tight, but we decided to risk it anyway.

Then things got even worse.

Our train back to the airport was delayed by 14 minutes — a delay we simply couldn’t afford. In a panic, we abandoned the train idea completely and booked a €44 Uber instead.

Thankfully, our Uber driver drove like a man on a mission.

At one point, it genuinely felt like he was participating in the extreme day trip challenge himself.

The Eiffel Tower Sparkles

Before leaving Paris, we finally got the moment we’d been waiting for.

As darkness fell, the Eiffel Tower lit up and began to sparkle across the Paris skyline.

And honestly?

It was worth every second of stress that followed.

The Airport Panic

The final stage of the challenge quickly descended into complete chaos.

We were dropped at the wrong terminal, accidentally walked all the way to Terminal 2B instead of 2D, got delayed at security because of a suspiciously large selfie stick and spent the entire journey through the airport convinced we were about to miss our flight.

Miraculously, we made it to the gate with 20 minutes to spare.

Exhausted, stressed and absolutely shattered — but successful.

Was the Extreme Day Trip to Paris Worth It?

By the end of the day, we had walked more than 33,000 steps, eaten our body weight in French food and somehow managed to experience some of Paris’ most iconic sights in less than 24 hours.

Would we do it again?

Absolutely.

Extreme day trips aren’t exactly relaxing, but they are unforgettable. If you love travel, spontaneity and squeezing every possible second out of your adventures, they’re an amazing way to explore somewhere new without taking time off for a long holiday.

Paris in one day might sound impossible.

But somehow, we actually did it.
