Best Norwegian Fjords Cruise Ports Ranked
One of the best things about a Norwegian Fjords cruise is that every port feels completely different.
Some are all about dramatic scenery.
Others focus on culture, history or atmosphere.
And some simply leave you standing there wondering how a place can possibly look that beautiful in real life.
After cruising through Norway onboard Sky Princess and visiting Olden, Bergen, Stavanger and Skjolden, we thought we’d rank the ports honestly based on:
- scenery
- things to do
- atmosphere
- walkability
- overall experience
This is obviously personal opinion — but hopefully it helps anyone planning their own Norwegian Fjords cruise.
4. Skjolden – Peaceful Fjord Beauty
Best For:
- relaxation
- peaceful scenery
- quiet fjord atmosphere
Skjolden was the quietest port on our itinerary — and in many ways, that was its charm.
This is the sort of place where you slow down rather than rush around ticking off attractions.
Surrounded by towering mountains and calm water, Skjolden felt incredibly peaceful and untouched.
It doesn’t necessarily have the same level of attractions as some larger Norwegian ports, but that’s not really the point here.
The scenery itself is the attraction.
For people wanting:
- tranquillity
- photography
- scenic cruising
- relaxation
…Skjolden is absolutely beautiful.
3. Bergen – The Most Lively Port
Best For:
- culture
- shopping
- city atmosphere
- colourful waterfronts
Bergen felt completely different to the other fjord ports.
It was busier, livelier and far more urban — but still incredibly scenic.
The colourful waterfront area instantly gives Bergen character and there’s a real atmosphere around the city.
Compared to some of the smaller fjord villages, Bergen felt like somewhere you could easily spend several days exploring rather than just one cruise stop.
It’s also one of the easiest ports to explore independently, with plenty within walking distance of the cruise terminal.
While it didn’t quite have the jaw-dropping scenery of Olden, it offered the best combination of:
- city life
- Norwegian culture
- atmosphere
- history
2. Stavanger – The Best All-Rounder Best For:
- walkability
- Norwegian culture
- relaxed exploring
- balance of scenery and city life
Stavanger surprised us.
While Olden delivered the biggest “wow” scenery moments, Stavanger felt like the most complete overall destination.
It had:
- beautiful harbour views
- charming streets
- Norwegian culture
- a relaxed atmosphere
- plenty to do
It also felt extremely walkable and easy to explore independently from the cruise port.
Some ports on cruises can feel like they exist purely for tourism.
Stavanger still felt like a real, lived-in Norwegian city — and we really enjoyed that.
If we were choosing somewhere to return for a longer stay, Stavanger would be very high on the list.
1. Olden – The Most Spectacular Port
Best For:
- scenery
- excursions
- photography
- classic Norwegian Fjords landscapes
There could only really be one winner.
Olden was one of the most breathtaking places we have ever visited.
The scenery here genuinely felt unreal.
Snow-covered mountains surrounded the fjord in every direction and even standing on the ship looking out over the water felt like staring at a desktop wallpaper.
In fact, we were so distracted by the scenery that we somehow forgot how cold it was and ended up swimming in the ship’s pool whilst surrounded by snowy mountain peaks.
That probably sums Olden up perfectly.
Loen Skylift – A Must Do Excursion
One of the highlights of Olden was visiting the Loen Skylift.
The views from the top were simply spectacular and it became one of the standout moments of our entire cruise.
Even better, it was incredibly easy to organise independently from the cruise port — and much cheaper than booking through the cruise line.
If your cruise stops in Olden:
👉 do not miss the Loen Skylift.
What Makes Norwegian Fjords Cruises So Special?
What surprised us most about Norway was how untouched and clean everything felt.
We genuinely did not see a single piece of litter the entire trip.
Every port felt:
- peaceful
- well cared for
- scenic
- relaxing
And unlike some cruise itineraries where the ports can begin to blur together, every stop in Norway felt unique.
Final Rankings
So, our final Norwegian Fjords cruise port rankings are:
1. Olden
For jaw-dropping scenery and unforgettable fjord landscapes.
2. Stavanger
For culture, atmosphere and overall balance.
3. Bergen
For colourful city vibes and Norwegian character.
4. Skjolden
For peaceful relaxation and scenic beauty.
Would We Cruise Norway Again?
Without hesitation.
In fact, Norway instantly became one of our favourite cruise destinations ever.
The sail-ins alone are worth experiencing at least once in your lifetime.
And honestly?
Probably far more than once.
